Perhaps along similar lines, $| allows a droplet to take the quickest route down (out) without having to linger in a buffer.

I prefer Larry's "when you want your pipes piping hot." But then I'm a shell ninja, so I dont even think "that vertical character thingy" anymore. It is just the pipe.
