Perl Monks Tutorials -> Perl distribution?

This doesn't seem to have been meditated upon before:

I wonder what my fellow Monks would think if some of the Tutorials would actually be included in the Perl distribution as perlxxxtut.pod files? With consent of the original authors and reference to Perl Monks of course.

I think this would be a nice opportunity to help Perl further along, as well as bring more exposure to the Monastery in return.

If there are authors interested in this, I think there is still a (small) window of opportunity to get it into the imminent Perl 5.8.1. Tutorials would need to be podified and submitted to p5p. And may possibly be rejected anyway. So that may make it unattractive to do. But there are no sure things in life.

If someone thinks it's a good idea and would like to see his/her Tutorial as a perlxxxtut.pod file in the Perl distribution, but is not willing to put in the effort to podify it, then I would like to volunteer for that job.

Brilliant idea. I have learned much from the tutorials here and think many would make fine additions to the distribution (for whatever my vote counts). 'Course, I have one, but it isn't that relevant and I don't have time to podify much of my production code (though I do, painstakingly) let alone my tutorial, but...

Please have a look at perlcheat (rep: 99) and 216602 (rep: 206). I haven't come 'round to adding leading whitespace to the lines yet.

The truth is that I haven't submitted this to p5p yet because (even though people here do seem to like it) I fear rejection.

And perhaps perlpodtut (Or, with discussion: 252477 (rep: 120)) would be nice. Note that even though it's a POD tutorial, the document itself is not written in POD.

Juerd: Thanks very much for doing perlcheat and for taking the time to convert it to pod.

Everyone else: Feel free to send tutorials to p5p - sometimes they get accepted, sometimes they get turned down. With the 5.8.1 final release candidate (Jarkko hopes, I'm sure) coming up, now's not a good time, but proposing them for 5.9 is a great idea.

I've personally experienced the (mild) wrath of Jarkko when proposing updates to tests that weren't really needed in the 5.8.0 timeframe, but no one's held it against me. My debugger doc patch was accepted (and it was huge!), but only because I got it in early.

Worst thing that will happen is that the pumpking will say "no". Remember, the pumpking is the one you have to convince. Everyone else, whatever their opinion, doesn't have the power to say "put it in" or "take it out" - they can only comment.

I think adding reference to useful information in perl distribution is enough.

Perl distribution is already very large.
Besides, people who compile perl to get binaries usually are knowledgable enough and do not need such tutorials.
(this especially applicable to Windows users, where ordinary users do not even have C compiler installed)

But I think it would be lovely to add tutorials into www.perl.org and www.perl.com web sites.
Also I think binary distributions should also have tutorials.
