G'day HJO,
"Yes, but it is commonly considered bad practice. You can easily access global variables of the main program: $main::foo gives access to $foo in the main program"
I tried this and obviously it didn't work, ...
I don't see how this ties in with your question but what you claim obviously doesn't work, clearly does:
$ perl -le '$foo = "whatever"; print $main::foo;'
whatever

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
