Now if grep were smart enough to shortcut when called in "boolean" context, then there would be no reason not to use it. Of course, "boolean" context per se won't exist until perl 6...
Until then, using first from List::Util is one alternative.

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
