in reply to digitally sign XML Document

How about wrapping the parts you want to sign with a tag like this:

<specialPart signature="FCC8DB26CBB972B478FB080736B33953"> ... </specialPart>

Update: It seems that jfroebe has already given you a pointer to this Introduction to XML Digital Signatures in which the topic of signing specific portions of a document is addressed.
