You ought to be using $1 in the replacement, not \1. -w would have told you.

      Dear Anonymous Monk,

I must say there seems to be very little value in your ostentatious and inappropriate display of learning.

First, the code was in jest - any fool can see that - yet you seem to miss the point and comment as though it was a serious submission.

Second, the code is incomplete, it doesn't do anything as it is. You chip in pedantically yet ignore aspects such as the uninitialised variable.

Third, you choose to remain anonymous, increasing the difficulty of a meaningful dialogue or further elucidation.

Fourth, you think -w ought to be applied even where it would only detract from the point of humour, which leads me to wonder if if you correct grammar at parties.

I hope that my irritation at your snide comment does not prevent you from a good hard look at yourself in the mirror.
