Possible Wikipedia Link Bug

by kutsu (Priest)
on Feb 09, 2006 at 23:13 UTC ( [id://529233]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I've noticed several times that when linking to wikipedia with the wp:// link, words with a hyphen or space in the middle may not correctly link because of incorrect casing. IE. Mahi-Mahi will return page not found while Mahi-mahi will link to the correct page.

I've found that linking using wikipedia's own Special:Search (with the go option) corrects this problem. IE. /wiki/Special%3ASearch?go=Go&search=<Search Term>. Which leads to my question: Could such a change be made or does some policy prevent this?

Update: jdporter informed me that wp:// has been improved/fixed (Feb. 10, 2006)

I'm not aware of any policies of either PerlMonks or Wikipedia that would stand in the way of using that form. Technically, it's trivial.

A cursory look at Wikipedia suggests that their links are case-sensitive, which is not surprising. Their search function appears to correct the case, so that "mAHI-MAHI" is searched as "Mahi-mahi". Their search function apparently fixes input to agree with their capitalization scheme. This is probably not a bug, but a feature.

I've seen it documented somewhere that the URLs of wikipedia are more case-sensitive than the "go" box.

My policy is not to use wp:// links at all, but give a http link directly.
