    Yeah. The old 'power-save wake-up'.
Well what can I say. Space bar or ESC.

    Big-up the 'ESC' key...yea! : - |

      BOO !!!
The best way to wake up the computer is the following: Rip the plug right out of the back of the computer while banging fiercely on the desk. Then once you have slammed your head into the keyboard, calmly plug the computer back in. If it says you did not shut down properly, just ignore it and throw the mouse right at your monitor. Wait three days and the computer will wake up. Hope this helps and have a great day.

I look up - see that the screen is off and shout "Damn Powersaving @#$%^@!#!!!" while banging my head on my desk.....which in turn moves my mouse around wildly.

Power save mode? You mean, there's actually times when people aren't using their computers?

And really, it should be called "power waste mode". Because if you computer is on and you're not using it, you're wasting power, not saving it. That's the power of marketing, though...

wolfger - surely even you take a break every now and then. Perhaps to drink coffee, have a bathroom break, or dress up as a knight and hit people with a long stick?

I'm busted... Yes, I do have a life away from the computer, occasionally. I sleep, and I dress up like a medieval warrior to hit people with sticks. But I would save more power by turning my computer off... Which I don't do. :-(

As for drinking coffee Mountain Dew, and potty breaks, neither of those lasts long enough for the power save mode to be invoked.

When turned off, the computer uses an average of 2.3 W. When on hibernate, the computer uses an average of 2.3 W. Do you see any difference?
When turned off, the computer uses an average of 2.3 W

My computer uses "an average of" 0.0 Watts when turned off. If yours uses more, something's wrong with your power switch.

Um... opening the lid? Seriously, no love for us notebook-using folks?

I guess I have to vote for pressing the shift key, since that's what I do on my work desktop. I know that waking up the box from sleep will not propagate the keystroke, but since I set my display to sleep earlier than the rest of the box (and therefore, the keyboard is still active input), I got in the habit of using 'Shift'.

I'd use the mouse, but have gotten to the point where I rarely use it anymore... GIMP and games, pretty much.

I hit the left Control key because that's on the corner of the keyboard so it's easy to hit even before I sit down.

Update: Oh yeah, that's not power save mode of the machine, I never use that. It's just the monitor that's put to power save (after running the Matrix screen saver for a while).

I yell abuse at mine but it doesn't seem to do any good. Maybe if I connect a microphone I would have better luck. Anybody got any programs that will cause a wake-up event when a microphone picks up certain noises?

Anybody got any programs that will cause a wake-up event when a microphone picks up certain noises?

If it's only certain noises - then doesn't that imply that the system is already running a routine to tell the difference between a target noise & everything else?

Wouldn't this imply a need for out-of-phase hardware rather than simply a program?

Or maybe - just maybe - you could have different configurations for your system - that would power down all of the processes (like WiFi connectivity, power to the screen, power to the hard drive(s), etc.) except the audio processing and bring them all back up when you hear that target noise..

It's not quite the same - though IIRC most hardware with a 'standby' mode still uses up to 60% of the power it draws when it's 'on' - so it could technically fall into that range...

Depends on my mood at the time. My methods range from clicking a mouse button, hitting the space key to slamming my hand down the desk in frustration due to the REMF that just pissed me off and I need stress relief!

Then I have to put in my password since, even though I work from home and nobody is going to touch my computer, company security regulations require that my screen saver be password protected. There's even a lovely job that runs on my laptop that squeels on my if I disable the password.

Hmmm... wonder if that job would squeel on me if I downloaded pr0n to my laptop...

I always use the shift-key, even on my Zaurus. Even on windows, even when I thereafter must tell windows not to enable its 'sticky key' feature.

I got used to using the Shift key because every computer I currently own is running Debian, so I don't generally have to worry about the sticky keys thing. On the rare occasion when I find myself having to wake up Windows systems five times without using any other keys between times, though, the sticky keys thing bites me -- which, of course, annoys me. C'est la vie. I guess that's just another reason to go back to my Debian laptop again at my earliest opportunity.

What do you mean by "power-save" mode really? Any of the presented options do not account for suspend or hibernation states. So, no cookie for you, pollster.

Now, if "monitor" or "screen" were inserted somewhere, i would choose something from the below depending on my own state of mind ...

    • Moving the mouse around wildly
    • Clicking one of the mouse buttons
    • Pounding the keyboard
    • Pressing the shift key
    • Pressing the spacebar
    • Pressing another key which I believe will not affect any open programs or windows
    • Pressing any key, not caring if it affects any open programs or windows

Backspace. All of my boxes are password protected by screensaver, so Backspace ensures that the password field is empty and ready for typing.

Update: I guess this is waking the monitor from power save mode, not computer. As for the computers, they don't like power save mode very much.

Powersave mode? All the computers I've dealt with don't awaken from "power save mode;" it's more like a coma. "Awakening" them requires a power cycle. On my laptop, this required removing the battery.

Needless to say, I've disabled "powersaving" for my computers. The monitors will still go into their powersaving modes, but the box with all the noisy bits stays awake.

My Windows boxes ignore mouse movements in powersave (Why? I don't know nor do I particularly care), so I bang on the space bar (it's big and hard to miss). My FreeBSD box does pay attention to the mouse, so I just waggle it wildly.
