in thread Don't Write That In Perl!

Hi there.

I've never worked with chromatic, nor any one else here. I do know the personalities. I know tye's and chromatic's dry humour. I know of jZed's ways. Hey orby!

Have you worked with chromatic? If so, I'm sorry to hear you've had such a bad time w/ him. I doubt you have though w/ the blanket statement you made, "You and your alikes."

Reminds me back in a position of mine. My cow-orkers and I were chatting about programming, and somehow perl came up. Accused me of not being able to produce a lick of anything useful in perl. A coworker who I've worked with chimed in. Two things were said. "I'm not a bad worker." and "I trust him to write well organized perl." From everything chromatic has written, I believe him to be of that ilk. Do I agree how he organizes, maybe, maybe not. It'd depend on one of the billion of points he's made at the given time.

I know, I know. No one is bashing perl. Or were they? Bah, who knows. Anywho, unless you have worked with him to any extent, I suggest you not critique his work unless you really get into it. Sure, poke at his personality. Tell him that his name is misspelled, and doesn't have a capital letter. Let him know his punctuation is atrocious. If you've only met him, insult his tie, and his shoes.

But c'mmon, insulting his work without ever seeing it? Heck, I don't agree w/ how some things are written. A lot of your other nodes have come off quite negative towards these people you don't know. Most of us are good people. Sit back and get to know us a bit more before you continue posting.

Disclaimer: I've never met or worked with chromatic or met chromatic. If I do meet him and his tie and shoes are ugly, I'll get a good laugh. I think his name is spelled the way HE wants it to. Don't hurt me. :)

Obviously you are a nice guy and you reason.

To be totally truthful with everyone, the real issue is not me. I don't bash perl or insult anyone's work, but I am not the first one or the last one to point out the facts and truth: perl's current downward status and perl 6's danger to become vaporware are real.

It is not just here on this forum, it is online everywhere that every time you tell the truth, some perl guy will jump on you and beat you to death. They call you idiot, they call you everything that one can imagine. Oh my god!

Not every perl guy like this though. I am a perl guy myself, although I am also a java guy, a c# guy, a python guy, a lisp guy... You are also a reasonable and nice perl guy!

Perl 6 belongs to everyone as far as I know, not just those perl 6 guys. As a public affair, everyone of the general public has the right and obligation to comment. Although I am fully aware of the consequence of being called all sorts of names.

Well then. I only have 2 requests.

I agree, we have a right to critique perl up and down the line. Let's continue to do that. If it gives perspective, ruby has been around for ages, and it started hitting critical mass only 2 years ago? I could imagine perl6 doing the same should the popularity diminish. There are a lot of good ideas there.

Secondly, unless specifically someone is calling you out, show us all a level of respect. Blanket statements about us and what not, then picking at those who reply, or seek help, puts us on edge. I'm not asking you to pipe down and take abuse from anyone. Just be mindful, we're all not out to get you. :)

That's all I got for this thread. Peace.

Peace bro. I wasn't picking on every perl guy, why should I when myself is one. .

But when I see shit and something stupid, I will still clean up without any mercy. But let me gurantee you, I am not against everyone, but only a handful of those who thought that they are someone, when they are nobody.
