Well, you're using /\.+/, not /\.*/  :)

my $s = "abcdefg";

my @c = split /\.*/, $s;
print '/\.*/: ', join("-", @c), "\n";

my @d = split //, $s;
print '//:    ', join("-", @d), "\n";
