I was able to get this to work for me as well using MySQL.

use DBI;
use Data::Dumper;

my $dbh = DBI->connect(
    'DBI:mysql:database:host', 'user', 'pass',
    {RaiseError=>1}
);


print Dumper [
    $dbh->selectrow_array( 'select max(id),min(id) from movie' )
];
