How to best learn SNMP (with Net::SNMP)?

morgon has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I have a basic understanding of SNMP but have never really used it.

For an upcoming interview (for a freelance job) I now want to dig a little deeper (I can invest half a day).

So could someone please recommend some good resources on both SNMP in general and Net::SNMP?

Many thanks!

Thank you so much, now that you showed me Google my life will be so much easier in the future...

I simply add "good_tutorials_only=1" to my query and the chaff gets weeded out automatically - I never will have to bother anybody else for recommendations...

You will find the SNMP Object Navigator very helpful. It helps to determine which mibs is which and what it does.

Also, at some point you will have to look at the RFCs. Specifically RFC 3416 and RFC 1157.

To check the packets sent and received you can use Wireshark.

Lastly, Net::SNMP will block your application; if you need to do other tasks while Net::SNMP is waiting for a response, you can use POE::Component::Net::SNMP. This will especially help if your app has a UI.
