I've never used map before. It looks like @lines ends up with three elements because of the "1 .. 3" range. .oO(Verrry useful)
Would the loop work the same if you used until (eof FILE) instead of the while?

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
