Ever post a node that you couldn't wait to get posted because you thought, "This is the coolest thing I think I have ever posted"? You post the thing, and dust off your fancy robe, knowing full well that within hours your post will be hobnobbing with the posts in the best nodes of the day.

And then you check it a few hours later like a guy who thinks he has the winning lottery ticket, only to find that you weren't even close to winning the jackpot.

You don't care about XP. You're not the type. You don't care if all the ++'s bestowed upon that post generated one single XP. It's not about your XP or your level or your position in the monastary. It's about the node's XP. It's knowing that your peers feel that your node is as cool as you do, and you are not alone in thinking so.

Sometimes it happens with prose posts, but most often this seems to happen to code posts. Admittedly, they're not always applicable to the widest audience, but you want the little fellas to grow up to be successful.

You're not supposed to toot your own horn, but you know that some of your old posts are good. They're under appreciated. Somehow they missed out on the recognition that you thought they deserved.

So where are they? Let's give them some of the love that they missed out on while growing up.

Update:I was actually hoping someone would link their favorite posts in this thread.

I list them on my home node

I keep a short list of posts, mostly mines, obviously I know them well, but also a couple of others I came accross and really wondered why they did not get a better rep.

I am not sure it helps much though. At least their rep hasn't changed much since I put them there, but I hope some people have alook at them when they visit my home node.

I like visiting home nodes BTW, some people have created really amazing pages!

I've been thinking about this exact thing this week. Except it started from the other end. I had two posts that were severly over ++'d and I was perpexed as to why. That led me to think about other things I've posted that I felt were much more valuable, readable and informative that barely found their way into double digits. There was one in praticular (no shamless plugs) that took me a week to put together... it was something to download. I thought it would be benificial to quite a few people. It got very little love and only one response.. which happened to be of praise.

But when it comes down to it, it doesn't really matter. Votes and Reps are what they are. I actually feel more guilty for nodes that I think were inconciquential getting upvoted 10x what they were probably worth vs. feeling unloved for something I was proud of getting no votes.

There's too many outside factors involved in the Rep of a node to really worry about it. There's time of day that it was posted, day of week, whether it's been frontpaged or not and whether or not you say the popular things. If you're posting at the wrong time of day, your node might slip out of site before a lot of people read it. If you post on a weekend (like now :) ) there's much less traffic here. If it's on the front page, it will get many more ++'s than if it's not. And if you write things like "use strict and warnings", "use CGI" and "try Super Search", people upvote more.

There's been a lot of quality nodes that never received the praise that I thought they should, but c'est la vie. HomeNodes are good for that. I've spent an amazing amount of time at tilly's homenode reading through quite a bit of his links. I try to check out other's too to see if and what they've linked too. Unfortunately I haven't linked any nodes off my homenode, but it's now going to be a priority of mine. Not my own. I feel if it truly is as good as I think it is, someone else will recognize that and make refrence to it someplace. That's my M.O. for most things though..

Maybe people should post a node written by someone else that they think was under appreciated?

You know, I've never posted once expecting a node to garner more than 0 XP. The fact that I've hit Best of the Week 3 times (yes, I've counted! *grins*) has stunned me. In fact, the three nodes that made it there (and the top three nodes in my Highest Rep) were questions, not answers!

Of course, this all goes to show that I'm completely clueless on how to pre-judge a node's merits. :-p

I think I have the inverse problem. I post some silly Meditation or Discussion item which ends up in my top ten nodes-- but then I post several good, sharp Perl answers and the combined rep on all of them doesn't hold a candle to the "meta" nodes. Is this because not everyone reads all the answers (I know I don't) and most everyone reads most of the "meta" nodes? Or is this because no one wants to vote on answers for fear of upvoting a wrong answer? Or because they have no way to tell by looking whether an answer is suitable? I assume it's mostly the former, but it always makes me wonder when I see that. :)

I tend to post late (and often obscurely), so I don't expect too much response (and try to just be amused). But what can be discouraging is when I post a response that (I think) can really help someone and _they_ don't respond/seem to notice.
As to over ++'d nodes, I noticed long ago that it mostly has to do with what's around it, time of day, etc.
And yes, do like mirod suggests (I actually had noticed two of his selections). -- Maybe I'll start noting nodes which I'm surprised haven't gotten more notice.
