Perlmonks is really one of the best resources Perl has. I think without the monastery I would probably still be coding in a fairly horrid manner. I am constantly amazed by the help given to total newbies by people who are really at a very high level of expertise. Anyway, enough flattery.

I have decided to get my hands dirty, be a real man (grrowl) and brave the world of C++. Mainly to hack KDE, it has to be said, but perhaps also in the theory that a gritty, macho language might be useful for employment at some point. My question is, what are the best C++ community resources? I'm looking for a place with like-minded people. You know, real men. Men who don't mind getting their hands dirty, real close to the iron, helping an inexperienced boy. (All together now: Y-M-C-A ...)

    This is nearly a FAQ here, but yours is graciously stated. There is nothing like perlmonks thriving for any other language.

    Here are some resources:

    • The comp.lang.c++.moderated newsgroup is a good resource -- Warning, it's mostly about standards issues and laziness is unrewarding there. Lurk before you leap. Their FAQ is excellent.
    • The latest edition of Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language is the book to buy. There are other good books, but none are better than that, and many are not worth the paper they're printed on.
    • Stroustrup's home page has links to all sorts of resources.
    • You may be able to slip in the occasional question here on CB or posed in terms of Inline::CPP.

      It is almost a FAQ... How about putting up something concerning where people can find the C/C++/Java equiv of perlmonks (javajunkies in the case of java... i've yet to see a good C community, however).

    There are several communities 'out there': come to mind. And while www.cug.org is the Cray User's Group, the real CUG (C User's Group) can be found at http://www.hal9k.com/cug/!

    It's rumored that you can build your own everything driven site around the C++ world. If my host was anything bigger than the DSL it's on now, I'd try it..
