You may find How to introduce 8 year olds to (Perl) programming? as an interesting start - kutsu's computers are dumb idea sounds like a great start for a first class. Sure, that thread was for 8 year olds, and you're dealing with 12 year olds, but that's what's going to let you progress to more "advanced" ideas later.
