The meaning &lt;i&gt;is&lt;/i&gt; more familial than "servant", but the suffix &lt;b&gt;(n)dil&lt;/b&gt; implies strong devotion.  I have the Silmarillion backing me on this one.  It's somewhere between "friend" and "servant"... a word that escapes me at the moment.
