For example, where my nick comes from. Or where I'm employed. So I'm going to address the latter. I work for a rather large software development company whose name I'm sure many people here will recognise. Some of these will recognise it as a competitor, others possibly as an ally or partner. Thus, I am not going to make it explicit. I don't want those who think that this company is great to give me undeserved respect, nor those who think of me as a dirty competitor to give me undeserved disrespect. Further, I don't want to know if you work for a competitor - I want to keep plausible deniability if it turns out that I'm "helping the competition" (which would be expressly against my employment contract). Rather than face that type of quandary, it's much easier to just be helpful (and be helped) in ignorance of where my help is being used (or coming from). The truly curious can figure it out through a couple of really straight-forward google searches.
