&lt;p&gt;Hmm, so instead of ensuring some variables are not interpolated by replacing &lt;code&gt;"$foo"&lt;/code&gt; with &lt;code&gt;"\$foo"&lt;/code&gt;, you instead ensure the other variables &lt;i&gt;are&lt;/i&gt; interpolated by replacing &lt;code&gt;"$bar"&lt;/code&gt; with &lt;code&gt;"^.$bar.q^"&lt;/code&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That doesn't seem like such a good trade to me.&lt;/p&gt;
