&lt;p&gt;Be careful with variables named &lt;tt&gt;$a&lt;/tt&gt; and &lt;tt&gt;$b&lt;/tt&gt;, they are special when used in conjunction with [perldoc://sort].&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For example:

sort { $b cmp $a } @foo;
&lt;/code&gt;
gives you an reverse alphabetical (ASCIIbetical really) sort on @foo.
