Okay, I'm not quite getting it. :)

&lt;p&gt;I want to understand what it is that makes closures something that [tilly|some] (maybe many) consider a fundamental programming technique.

&lt;p&gt;Can you offer any examples to illustrate? What purpose do they serve? Can I get by without them? I'm a [http://www.python.org|Python] user as well, and from what I understand Python doesn't have proper closures.
