I'm looking to start up Java Monks. So far myself and Moonie are interested in pursuing and developing the site. What we need is help with finding a server/host and a list of other individuals that would be willing to help out (either through coding, maintenance, site layout/design, whatever...)

Anybody got a box they'd be willing to run it on? (I'd do this myself from school, but I've only got one and I need it for Windows stuff... blah). I'll look into getting another one, but do to lack of money I won't be able to do this for a while.

If anybody has ideas for determining how many active users we might have in a day (how many does PM have?), how many posts, yada yada...

Either reply to this thread, /msg agent00013, or email agent00013@hotmail.com. Thanks a bunch... This'll be my last post here about JavaMonks since I know it's off topic, so if you're interested please contact me.

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

You might wanna talk to gregor42, a young man with some hardware, who wants to start CJAN, the Comprehensive Java Archive Network.

He is also in need of hardware, and has a website at http://gregor42.perlmonk.org/, and more importantly http://www.javafu.com/.

I, crazyinsomniac, would definetly like to see something "better", or at least more "monkish" (more navigable, more moderated, with a better search) than forums.java.sun.com which seems to be a gathering of people saying: "yes, please, I have the same problem, email me if you find an answer. Thank you very much..."

    upate:
I am aware this is really really Off Topic, but if we can use vrooms patched up version of the E2 engine, we can run this site completely in perl ;-)!!!

Also, I would like to have first dibbs at preserving my own username at JavaMonks. In fact, I would like to be an editor on JavaMonks. Either that, or vroom ;-)

Disclaimer: Don't blame. It came from inside the void

    perl -e "$q=$_;map({chr unpack qq;H*;,$_}split(q;;,q*H*));print;$q/$q;"

      off topic

OK, I suppose I've been out-ed. I hadn't meant to draw too much attention until the sites had gone up.

I am currently developing two sites, javafu.com & perlfu.com . These will also be theme/metaphor oriented, but with a different slant and technology base than here.

Yes, one of the projects on the top of the list will be a CJAN-ish repository. Honestly, I don't know if it's being done by others also & haven't researched the name yet. Obviously I don't want to infringe... However, the purpose will be the same as the CPAN. A replicated architecture serving as a repository for useful packages to be shared openly.

Many thanks to Vroom-sama for words of encouragement.

      Any interested, please find me...

THERE... end of shameless self-promotion at the expense of the monastery... I humbly beg your forgiveness. But before --'ing me, please consider that this is not a root level node, nor did I offer this unsolicited...

As far as editors and such things go, that will be determined later.

Is vroom's patched up E2 engine available? Or is it too highly customized for the PerlMonks site that it would be easier to start from the basics.

Update: After poking around the Everything website some more, I think I'll be able to do some design and testing of the site on my own machine with a few configuration changes (and maybe limited external testing by interested parties).

Also: What form of contact would you all like to use to keep in touch? I'd keep posting here, but they'd run us off for being so off topic. How about an email list, message board, or on IRC somewheres? I'm up for any of these, let me know what you think.

I'd be willing to help a bit. You might think about just hosting it on spaceports with banner ads and see if activity becomes high enough to necessitate a move, if you work the banners properly, then the revenues will equal those necessary to keep the sight afloat. Just an idea.

    Just Another Perl Backpacker
A free host would be nice, but I don't think it would be highly enough configurable to handle the Everything engine. I've had a few offers from people attending various universities that are willing to host the site until it A) Gets to big || B) School ends. The only problem with this is that... well, if it goes down, it might take a while to get back up. I'll continue to look into this.
I may be able to host it.. I definately have the space on a server (least I think.. I may have to ask vroom or whoever) how much space it could take up. I'll have to look into it a bit more. But just to let you know.. :)

Just a little nit... but you will of course be writing Java Monks entirely in Java, won't you?

If not, your community will be riding your butt :)

Course I can't say too much, I gave up on java a while ago...

                    - Ant

I disagree actually, I don't think the site has to be done all in java, although from what I've seen it can be made to work decently.

Each language has it's uses, if perl or php would work better for the javamonks (or whatever it ends up being called) site I see no reason not to use it.
I've gotta agree with Chrisf on this. It would be nice for a Java oriented site to be run with entirely Java Server Pages, but I have no intent of redeveloping a project as large as Everything in JSP.

I was thinking about offering my Cobalt Raq3i system as a hosting platform. My host really gouges my pocketbook if I go over my Bandwidth limit (10Gb), so I wrote to vroom to ask about traffic at perlmonks.org. His response is attached below.

My box has MySQL and mod_perl installed. I think I can run the Everything engine without too many problems.

I am still interested in offering my box as a hosting platform, if you are still looking for a home. My server has about 2 gigs of space available and will be sharing bandwidth with three other LOW traffic sites.

I'm honestly not sure about the bandwidth but I can research it. My guess is that would probably be sufficient for the first six months while the site gained an audience.
Is it your dedicated server? You'll need access to MySQL, Perl, and mod_Perl. We haven't had a lot of success running the Everything engine in a Windows environment.
I'd be up for helping you out if you think it's doable, I also know of some others who would probably volunteer to help. --Tim

    Subject: Bandwidth on perlmonks?

    Tim,
Hello, my name is Richard and I'm still a lowly acolyte on PerlMonks.org (id oakbox). On the chatbox today someone brought up setting up an everything engine for a perl monks equivalent aimed at C programmers. Even though there were several "What a good idea!" 's no one had a server where it could sit.
My question is, what do YOU think about this idea and how much bandwidth does perlmonks burn through in a month? I have a 10GB monthly limit on my server right now, would that handle the load? Thank you,
    richard@oakbox.com

Richard, Thank you for the offer. I'll definitely keep it in mind. What operating system were you planning on running it on? Perhaps, if possible, we could set up an initial site on your server and begin running things if you're able to get the Everything engine successfully loaded.

I'm in the process of loading Everything on Red Hat 7.1 on my computer (having troubles though cause Win2k is power hungry and Red Hat isn't stealing the master boot record, blah). I think what I'd like to do is some of the initial testing and readying of the site on my machine and then procede to load it on the real host.
Name that Site

On a side note, thought I'd mention that somebody has already registered JavaMonks.org, so... drat. If anybody's got alternative name ideas, please message or email me... thanks. (or if you registered it, let me know...)

    Here's my ideas... (so far)
    BrewMonks
    PractitionerOfJava
    JavaJedi
    JavaMonkies... ok, not serious
    JavaJunky

anyway... they're just ideas, I probably wouldn't even use some of those...
I kinda like javajunky actually, really, I do :-) Anyways, I can probably help you guys out with some of the design/promotion of the site as well as misc stuff, I'll have to see what my partners think of the idea. As for actual knowledge of java, well, I don't have a problem learning. Our new site doesn't have much up yet at www.rapidimedia.com but check out www.redshiftdesigns.com Let me know if I can help.

My heart is for Perl, but my heaad tells me I must know JAVA better
(At least for some professionnal projects)

So if I have to study it, I'd really like to find a real community (Java forums just make me sick...).
    Count me in !
BTW I've got a server waiting for a connexion, if anyone has a solution here in France
(Preferably not too expensive ie <=500FF/Month) I'd be glad to host anything you want...)

I'd be interested in offering any help I can. I'm only a 'Junior Java Jockey' but thats set to change soon anyhoo.

Gimme a shout if you need volunteers for stuff.

Only yesterday, I was discussing this idea with a collegue of mine, with the view of doing a C++ one as well.

I have hardware, with PHP/4.0.6, MySQL, Apache but no mod_perl (sorry!)

I can provide accounts at cost price, if required... (/msg me if required)

    RatArsed

I don't think this is what you'd quite want but we buy a fair bit of hosting in bulk from Netfronts.com that we could use at cost. I think there's some old plans up on vtrmedia.com the prices on that page are a bit under double what we pay. Ideally I think it would be better to have someone host the site themselves, but I thought I'd just mention this as an option.

I've had my own domain online 24-7 at bereth.com for a few years now. Bandwidth is only single channel ISDN, however that would be enough to get people access to start setting up. For something like this I think it'd be worth paying to get cable into the house which may fix bandwidth issues for awhile? I'm hosting my own DNS so that hassle would be out of the way.

Currently it's Mandrake with mysql/apache/mod_perl. But I think we'd probably want to start fresh. I've already have another box to set up a BSD firewall with I just haven't had the time to do it. (Currently just running an IPChains f/w on the server -- stupid but the only thing I could do at the time).

I've also have gphnews.org(Site died for lack of interest). up with tomcat (waiting to integrate JBoss soon.) and have worked out javadoc to customize an API (have figured out how to set up download from the api but am not using it due to current bandwidth constraints.)

I'd be very willing to open up access to folks from Perl monks to do an old fashioned barn raising. The project fits in line with my current setup and professional direction, and I'm already comfortable with hosting from my bedroom. (Talk about High availability sysadmin :)

The only real issue(s) would be how quickly we would need to grow bandwidth and my ability to accomplish that as well as being more responsible with my backup schedule.

      Hey guys,

So I figure since vroom is being so nice and helping us out we should do a little tribute to him and call the new site "javamonks" (damn, I sure am original aren't I) .

I contacted the owner of javamonks.org/com/net and he is very interested in developing this and has said that he will donate the name to the project (he of course wants to be involved in it as well). So what we need now is a list of everyone who is Seriously interested in this and willing to contribute a substantial amount of time to it.

      - Chris Fairbairn
It is going to be called JavaJunkies. I know the Monk name is awesome, but I've already registered the domain name and I'm getting pretty close to have the DNS servers set up. We will obviously want to have ties to the monk community and there may be a way to utilize the javamonks.sites. We'll be able to discuss that in the future.
