perl IRC bot

Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I am about to start a perl bot project, just to get my self involved with sockets and such. Just a simple bot that will log channel info. I just want to know if anyone had any comments or suggestions especially pointers on what is the best approach. I'm going to use Socket;

    I can also suggest using a Perl aware chat client and don't waste YASC (Yet Another Socket Connection). I wrote a basic IRC bot like thing for xchat.
