Unfortunately, there is no macro recorder anymore, for PowerPoint 2010. The "Create Macro" link drops you into an empty VBA subroutine instead of recording your steps and presenting those as VBA subroutine now.

True, but the macro recorder was very handy for people who don't know any VBA/DOM to quickly record the process they wish to automate.
Use two parentheses: (Like this: :) )
Use one parenthesis: (Like this: :)
Reverse direction of the smiley: (Like this: (: )
Use angle/square brackets instead of parentheses
Use C-style commenting to set the smiley off from the closing parenthesis
Make the smiley a dunce: (:>
