as long there are "real" issues, we shouldn't care about the more trivial ones?
It seems like a political version of bike-shedding to me -- spending more time on trivial things because doing so is easier than dealing with serious ones. For example, if you want more women involved with Perl, you could set up a fund to sponsor female undergrads to attend conferences. Yes, that's hard and requires time and/or money; it's much easier to just have a flame-war over a throwaway joke on a website.
