FWIW, I tried using CAM::PDF:

$pdf = new CAM::PDF 'Jim Schueler.pdf' ; print $pdf->getPageText(1) ;

The results are about the same.

    Also got the same results using PDF::API3::Compat::API2

    I notice that CAM::PDF has a canCopy() method that sets permission to copy. Have you tried it?
