In late 2012 Stevan et al started building Moe, a new Perlish language design and implementation, as an experiment. By May 2013 Stevan had concluded "if you go into Perl 5, fix the language warts, make the runtime more sane and fix the object system, you get something that looks a lot like Perl 6". He stopped working on Moe last summer and instead refocused on putting the right MOP under Perl 5.

About a year ago Nicholas Clark began regularly hanging out on #perl6 (and later #moarvm). He has had a big impact in the last few months by helping with MoarVM, especially hardening it. In January he said "it's going to be interesting to see how perl6-m {Rakudo on MoarVM) converges first on Moose startup performance, then on Moose runtime performance, and finally on "native" Perl 5 ... it may never get there, but I hope that that isn't the case".

    Wowowowwww, stop the boat! Ralph finally admitted that maybe perl-6 won't get there!

    Of course he had to quote one of his favorite stalkees to do it, but at least that seems like progress! Maybe next thread Ralphie boy will admit that "perl-6 is taking a while" and sometime in the next five years you might catch him saying that "Perhaps the long delay in getting the booze-filled jokers of #perl6 to release anything useful or usable made Perl less attractive to start new projects in".

    Maybe both of the remaining Perl programmers (*sigh*) will be around to notice.
