      Yes! But also "Fail Safe".

        > But also "Fail Safe".

I didn't mention Fail Safe cause the "computer theme" didn't seem strong enough.

But if you think technological dangers in all generality are not too off topic here, I'll counter with Metropolis, the mother of all dystopian SciFi movies ...

Isn't The Matrix more computer-themed than Jurassic?
I know it's been ages since I've seen it, but for the life of me, I can't recall ANYTHING computer-related in Jurassic Park.

This is a bigger point in the book than in the movie. In order to keep personnel costs down, the entire park is heavily automated (with multiple Cray supercomputers). The computer part of the story is how the greedy programmer disables the safety systems so he can make a clandestine meeting, and makes it so that only he can turn them back on

        .

What, no Swordfish? Has a pretty high giggle factor but at least they tried with some of the references.

And of course there's the classic Billion Dollar Brain.

      > What, no Swordfish?

      What, no Sneakers ?

      > the classic Billion Dollar Brain.

      and the classic Westworld ?

      Cheers Rolf ;-))

I've only seen two of these and haven't heard of half... do I have to turn in my geek card?

None. There's isn't a really good computer themed movie at all.

Come on! Why ignoring the cultural impact?

E.g. Weird Science motivated a whole generation of nerds to start computing ... ;-)

      Cheers Rolf

(addicted to the Perl Programming Language and ☆☆☆☆ :)

So, you define a movie's goodness by cultural impact? That's turn most rating on their heads. :)

S'funny, but doctors & nurses love hospital/doctor/medical dramas and soaps, because they are so unrealistic.

Ditto for: cops & cop shows; spies & spy shows; CSIs and CSI shows; lawyers & law shows; ...

None of them are realistic of procedural detail; they're just entertainment.

Why do programmers get so het up about comp-themed shows?

With the rise and rise of 'Social' network sites: 'Computers are making people easier to use everyday'
Examine what is said, not who speaks -- Silence betokens consent -- Love the truth but pardon error.
"Science is about questioning the status quo. Questioning authority".
In the absence of evidence, opinion is indistinguishable from prejudice.

Anyone who knows a subject will tell you how inaccurate and terrible Snopes, Wikipedia, news shows, movies, and books are. They are all aimed at what popular culture wants to believe or will be entertained by, with the facts just helping to spur the writer's innovations.

The gap between what is entertainment and what is truth is quite wide. That causes a shock to people who know it, and they respond either with a positive slant, and enjoy the entertainment, or with a negative slant, and are offended by it.

That being said, i'll bet there are just as many doctors and nurses that are offended by those shows as there are those who are entertained by it. It's just that only the news of the entertained have reached your ears (because it confirms your own entertainment and was likely relayed for that very purpose.) You happen to be closer to computers, so you actually hear the complainers too. It isn't ay different, you just hear more of it.

You cannot legitimately say there is no BEST computer-themed movie in a list of computer-themed movies.
Didn't ask for a good one. Asked for the best. Best and least bad can be unfortunate synonyms.

    Of course Wargames!

When programming a game, I often call the computer-opponent WOPR. And use debug-outputs like a friendly "Greetings, Professor Falken".

Absolutely a classic, even if LanX made a good point with Westworld.

"Antitrust" is insufficiently bad for this list; you need:

    The Lawnmower Man

("The Lawnmower Man is inside your head forever!!!")

Was going to say revolution as a joke, but that's a tv series. Really though if you've not seen it, it's absolutely terrible.

You kidding me, I only log into this web site so I can learn how to Hack the Gibson. Second best computer themed movie of all time: Sneakers with Robert Redford. Whistler is the best hacker of all time, supposedly there were legitimate real blind people who figured out about the 2600 hz tone giving free phone calls back in the day. Forget where I read that. That reminds me. I once spoke to John Draper on ICQ when I was.. 15 or 16 can't remember. Not too long ago, I'm 31 now. Anyways I told him he was my hero and one day I would work for the CIA. He says, "I can think of better people to work for." Best day ever.

Well I voted Tron, I was fifteen when it came out so it ranks pretty high in my "woah" moments of cinema going. ;)

As another possible candidate I rather liked The Thirteenth Floor (imdb) from 1999.
