    ctrl:nocaps

Extra control key for the win! (you can never have too many - why, yes, yes I am an emacs user.)

    Good Day,
        Dean

It would be good if you could distinguish between the two control keys and use one for C-x and the other for C-c

Pried off - smartest thing I ever did.
Nothing against the key itself - it just needs to be repositioned to a location (eg the bottom drawer of my desk) where my fat fingers can't inadvertently hit it.

    Cheers,
    Rob

At the office, i hit it so often when i meant to hit a, that i installed autohotkey and remapped it to a. Just in case, ctrl-caps is mapped to caps lock. It works like a charm.

Now, if i could just map semi-colon to a single-quote when it's in middle of a word. :)

      "Pried off..."

On a Mac there is no need to damage the keyboard: One can simply assign "no action" to capslock in the keyboard prefs :-)

      "...my fat fingers..."

Consider a diet. Potential side effect: perhaps you can buy a Mac with the money you save - if you don't use the Lagerfeld Diet concept ;-)

      Best regards, Karl

there is no need to damage the keyboard

It's not damage. I regard the repositioning of the Caps key to a more convenient location as nothing other than a keyboard design improvement.
        ;-)

        Cheers,
        Rob

Haven't I already told the answer to this at the previous poll The most useless key on my keyboard is:?

I mean, sure, maybe my settings have changed or something, but we don't usually repeat polls here.

we don't usually repeat polls here.

Given how good some of them are, i think we should. :)

Anyway, this is different. If the first was like, "Is caps lock useless?", this one's like, "ok, so what'd you do about it?" :)

    Messing up my passwords...

I tried re-inventing the wheel again, but everytime I push it, it still falls flat on it's side...

If you rework your passwords with caps in mind, it might be able to make them even better. :)

Once I stopped using windows, it turned into a useful key!

All of you happy people who only converse with other english-speaking users never have need of such complicated non-standard keys such as ç á or äÖ...

Neither do I 99% of the time. But switching keyboard layout to write a quick mail is a serious pain. Linux and the caps-lock to the rescue!

Really, it is such a drag to do it any other way, I still smile inwardly every time I write one of those letters, thinking to myself what a &*%*# mess this used to be ;)

One of the variants of Windows -- I think it was W2K -- had an option so the capslock key would be turned off when I pressed the shift key. Since this is how typewriters worked, it was a behavior I was used to and found convenient.

You installed Windows on your typewriter? Or do you type up your own Perl? :)

It was a tough road to find a typewriter that could manage a Turing-complete language, but get the right typeball on an IBM Selectric, and a few tweaks to the gcc compiler...

Not quite. If you set the capslock key on a typewriter, pressing the shift key will unset it. You could set the keyboard on W2K to behave this way.

I've actually considered disabling the caps lock key on my laptops. In my work life I must have to put in my userid/password tokens about fifty times during the work day. Since my passwords generally use a mix of everything on the keyboard I find myself accidently activating caps at the worst possible moment.

I remap Caps lock to Control, which is something i use often.

    jeffa

    L-LL-L--L-LL-L--L-LL-L--
    -R--R-RR-R--R-RR-R--R-RR
    B--B--B--B--B--B--B--B--
    H---H---H---H---H---H---
    (the triplet paradiddle with high-hat)

What about the control key itself?

I'm a little afraid of remaps, as i might be using a different computer without it and get even more annoyed.

It still works as advertised. :) What i don't have any more is the ability to lock caps on, which i just don't have a need for.

        L-LL-L--L-LL-L--L-LL-L--
        -R--R-RR-R--R-RR-R--R-RR
        B--B--B--B--B--B--B--B--
        H---H---H---H---H---H---

I have a fantastic, 20 year old mechanical keyboard, so I've mapped it to be the Windows Key. All well and good except for the odd accidental hit when gaming...

I remap it as well, but to Compose.

Remapped to <Esc> (convenient when using Vim).
