Or, if possible, use formatting to differentiate (like this :-) )

    I disapprove of emoticons

Hm... just one example from http://www.apa.org/monitor/feb06/egos.aspx

... Kruger and his colleague Nicholas Epley, PhD, of the University of Chicago, have published research that helps explain why these electronic misunderstandings occur so frequently. In a study in the December Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (Vol. 89, No. 5, pages 925-936), they find that people overestimate both their ability to convey their intended tone-be it sarcastic, serious or funny-when they send an e-mail, as well as their ability to correctly interpret the tone of messages others send to them.

I think a smiley is easiest to type to say, "Hey, I'm just kidding" ;-)

      Which smiley is that, winky?

My choice, but the real problem is how to frown

(unfortunately putting the colon after the paren looks strange ):

(and it doesn't get better with an extra dash )-:

    Or am I wrong? ;)

Frowns in parenthetical usage? Why not:

      • (   :<(   )
        ...or
      •      .  .
               ̑
              ...or

      •             —   :-(   —
                    ...among other possibilities?
        > Why not ...

        ( psst ... compatibility! ;)

FWIW a Russian friend once send me many "serious" mails full of unbalanced parentheses "noise", till I understood that smileys have neither eyes nor nose over there! )

In the end its a question of habit and standards.

        Cheers Rolf

I don't like smilies in the middle of a paragraph (most of the time) ;-)

The real problem appears when a smiley is replaced by an icon in the wrong place by a forum software... This does not look nice in a phpBB post:
    10 READ A :PRINT A :DATA (8 + 8)

I compensate for ascinine graphics interpeters trying to detextify my emoticons by adding a space (which I fully expect to see thwarted by some self-righteous prat developer in the future):

           : -)

Ok, but how do you add a space to a statement like use Data:☺umper; and still have working code?

Other: If I can't easily rewrite the paragraph to avoid visual clutter, replace the emoticon with a less ambiguous one such as :-P or :-D

This is a serious problem which needs more mainstream attention :-)

I usually avoid this wherever possible (along with the word wherever ;-)

I don't like any of the options, not one.

Part of me wants to know what is "best." The other part would rather smile each time it comes up.

This problem is already solved by a very famous quote from Linus Torvalds:

(Only wimps use tape backup: _real_ men just upload their important stuff on ftp, and let the rest of the world mirror it ;)

That might have more to do with him wanting to make the quote tweetable, as it is exactly 140 characters (or at least SMS-able for the following decade):

I simply add a space after the :)

      ...and then another parenthesis?

    Current poll stats are 396 total votes with the options as 213, 48, 12, 7, 9, 7, 78, and 22. A lot a repeat numbers there:
