EDIT after the parent was reaped. Parent asked "How can you delete a post" but was considered, inaccurately, as a "duplicate". The rest of this node is the original response.

    You don't!

You can ask to have a node reaped. if it's a dup, the janitors may oblige.

But if you simply delete content, some Monk will ask the janitors to restore what you (thought you had) removed... and the janitors will likely do that, too.

So, why? Because even a poorly asked question provides context for its answers, and the Monastery's judgement is that keeping the context (and, thus, its value for future readers) has higher priority than sparing the writer of the [poor|inadequate|lazy]-question a minor embarassment.

You can edit a post, however: just return to the node while logged in.

It's considered good form to use <strike> tags to strike through text that you have removed, to preserve the context of former postings that were made in response to the original. Though you may wish to use some other indication of the original content if that would be more readable. And if you can think of an appropriate one.
