Keeping the Library up to date

The documents in the Library are all looking a little dated. I believe that they date from Perl version 5.005 or thereabouts.

Obviously keeping them up to date with the latest versions of the Perl documentation is not a trivial task so I'd like to make a suggestion.

Don't do it.

The perldoc.com has been around for a while now and seems to do a great job of keeping an up to date version of the Perl docs on the web. I think it would make more sense to point people at that site for up to date Perl docs so that the people working on this site can concentrate on building features that aren't available elsewhere.

I agree; especially since perldoc now lets you browse the docs from more than one distribution. Thus, if you're still using 5.005_03, you can find the applicable documents.

I know some believe one should use the latest and greatest, but many of us aren't administrators on the machines hosting our stuff, so being able to easily view the right materials is a big help.

I have noticed one glitch with perldoc, though. Links selected from the printable versions of various pages don't seem to work. It's not a big problem; simply hit your Back button and then select the link. Still, it would be nice to have the links work from all pages.

Otherwise, perldoc.com is a great service and kudos to those keeping it up.

Perhaps we should add an rtfm:// tag so we can quickly link to search topics on perldoc. Whadda think?

Update: VSarkiss notes that doc:// might be a less "loaded" tag for the above suggestion. Comments?

Agreed that rtfm: is a loaded word. Why not just call it perldoc://whatever, and leave it at that? Who knows what other types of *doc:// might come along in the future?
