As for a message broker, yes. Depends on what you need/want, this can be relatively easy. For example, i use my DIY "Clacks" opt-in notifier service to talk in near-real-time between a few hundred processes. You can find the relevant source code at the maplat_helpers and maplat_framework mercurial repositories. (It's not on CPAN yet. The code is used in production, but doesn't have good documentation yet. Sorry about that)
