For those wondering what the 'mu' reference is. Not that there would be many of us who haven't read the entire jargon file from 0 to Z ;)

Incidentally, has anyone ever made it through Hofstadter's G.E.B. ? I have a bookmark about 1/3 the way through :)

I finished G.E.B. but its cover is more battered than most of my books, due to the extra time it spend in my bag because of the bits where I couldn't absorb more than a few pages at a time.

Thanks for the explanation on the meaning of mu! I'm surprised that I haven't heard this one before. I would image that politicians in our country would have adopted this word with open arms! ;-)

I'm very fond of the Discordian text on Mu,

      = Zarathud's Enlightnment =

Before he became a hermit, Zarathud was a young Priest, and took great delight in making fools of his opponents in front of his followers.

One day Zarathud took his students to a pleasant pasture and there he confronted The Sacred Chao while She was contentedly grazing.

"Tell me, you dumb beast." demanded the Priest in his commanding voice, "why don't you do something worthwhile. What is your Purpose in Life, anyway?"

Munching the tasty grass, The Sacred Chao replied "MU".

Upon hearing this, absolutely nobody was enlightened. Primarily because nobody could understand Chinese.

I'm bookmarked about 1/3 of the way through also, and I haven't looked for it for some time now. It just takes some effort. And besides, I need last year's acid to get further and further from my system before I have room for any more of GEB. ;)

A self-respecting geek might not have read the jargon file from cover to cover? Sheesh. Even my teeny-bopper daughter could tell you what mu is! :-) I printed out the HTML Jargon File and it lived in the bathroom for several months.

Yes, I read GEB - it was amazing, I couldn't put it down! I thoroughly recommend it to all hacker types. The only bit I didn't grok was the complicated maths bits, I couldn't get my head around those. (a bad admission for a programmer I suppose).
