The pointy-haired boss miraculously combines two qualities that are common by themselves, but rarely seen together: (a) he knows nothing whatsoever about technology, and (b) he has very strong opinions about it.

Your challenge when faced with bosses like this is to find out what they do understand. And, more importantly, what they fear. Then reframe your arguments to play to that fear.

I once managed to dissuade a Sales VP from pushing a stupid idea by planting the suggestion that his idea might jeapordize the bonus that would get him a new sports car.

It's all about finding the right button.
