    I think I am a 76- 100% overall. But rank myself (A) below.

Really depends on your take on 'effort'.

    (A) - A skilled developer may have to put in very little effort to get the job done, but may have to put in a lot of effort to get to important mettings, ect. ( Important mettings,,, is that an oxy moron? )

    (B) - On the other hand, some may have to put in a ton of effort writing code, and no effort doing anything else.

    (C) - What about those who have effortless jobs, they may apply themselves 100%, but have a job that requires 0 effort. Such as a Ice cream taste testor, visual basic developer, or gas station clerk.

    (D) - None of the above, you live on welfare, and have to make 100% effort to cash that check. Or a similer situation.

Hey! Being a gas station attendent is much more difficult then it sounds.

No, really. You have to deal with things beeping at you and a constantly growing stack of customers, all while making sure nobody drives off, and constantly copying numbers between different machines.

In other words, it's a lot like programming, except standing up and at four times the pace with a tenth of the payrate.

Also, there's a difference between front-loaded and continous effort. My job doesn't require constantly doing 100%. It does, however, require learning how to do whatever needs to be done, quickly, and well. I do 120% some of the time, and 70% some of the time.

Of course, the entire thing doesn't make sense unless you say "percent of what"?

I resent that '0 effort ... visual basic developer' .. try working with some MS "programming languages" and then tell me I'm doing 0 effort.. (and if you ask me, it's a language like any other, incl. Perl)

Anyfish, I rate myself 31-50% for 'at work', I put more effort into stuff I do for myself, than stuff I do just because it pays the bills.. Such is life I guess..

I've posted this before, but it bears repeating. At a job interview, a candidate asked "How many people work here?" I replied "About half, which is pretty good."

When I'm perusing Perlmonks or another site, I usually think of myself as working smarter, not harder.

I work at around 35 percent. I do this so my 35% is better than 99% of people's 100%.

    Think about it.

Here I am, an electrical engineering graduate with 25 years of Unix admin experience, 25 years of C programming, and 8 years of Perl programming, and they've got me writing ASP pages in VBscript and fixing broken M$ Access applications (aren't all Access applications broken, by definition?). Like I'm really going to knock myself out doing this crap?

    Hi,

Is surfing the PerlMonks site considered work?

The fun thing with perl is that you can do a lot without much effort, so the ones who select 100% or more, should review their perl knowledge :-)

31-50% simply because I worked 110% coding time savers when I first started here.

I firmly believe in work smarter, not harder.

anyone ever seen that chart talking about how much effort is put on whatever day it is, its suppose to be a joke, but thats me...my effort varies depending on the day...then again my job sucks in general so thats a pretty big factor too

What exactly constitutes "work"? The way the question is phrased seems to imply that work is something which you have to make an effort for in the first place - sometimes, though, that isn't true. I do program a lot at work, mostly in Perl and PHP, and occasionally in other languages, but it's too much fun usually to really be something that could be called an effort.

Of course, there are times when work is not fun, too, but with regard to programming at least, that almost never happens to me. Well - maybe I'm just lucky. :)

Why do the work yourself when you can hire others to do it for you? I can get CowboyNeal to do just about anything as long as I provide him with food and a dedicated T-1.

Interesting question. I admit that lately it has not been what I voted it to be. However, I voted it the way I usually am ( no really! ). Im just in one of those down times. I think every coder gets those now and then. Should that be counted toward my effort when its speratic and usually short lived?

Is it in relation to amount of effort it takes to do the job? -If the same amount of effort is used to climb a flight of stairs as to climb a mountain - is it the same percentage in both cases? Or is it the percentage of your total effort per day divided by everything you do in one day? (percentage for work/raising kids/having fun?)
essentially, I get paid to check an average of probably 25-50 customers out in 7 hours of work, and pull 5 aisles of merchandise to the front of their respective racks... which leaves me with about 6 hours of work clock time, where I sit and twiddle the fingers, or read the paper... but hey I do what they tell me, and I get paid for it, and in a month I'll have enough for my trip to germany to quit and get a better job.

work it harder make it better do it faster makes us stronger more than ever hour after our work is never over.

The fact that you try to reach something is more important than the fact that you actually reach your goal.
So I chose 71%-100% anyway, because you try to do something the best way... But nobody is perfect. Never.
    And that is good :)
