IRC::Bot - Should I upload to CPAN??

defyance has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Greetings all, I come seeking advice.

I have some software, that I've put quite a bit of effort into. Something that I feel would make a good addition to CPAN. In a way, it is reinventing the wheel, but this wheel fits a slightly different kind of vehicle, and was built with different features. There are other sets of modules on CPAN that is similar to what I've been working on. However, I feel that my software fits a slightly different niche. I released a bit of it at node Seen.pm. That code has been ditched in favor of a more practical solution with Cache::FileCache, but you get the idea.

My question to you is, with knowledge of existing software fitting a similar goal, do I release it anyhow? I've never been in this kinda situation, and am looking for advice.

    Why don't you post the code here and see what people think? Without some more detail it's hard to say.

      If you want, you can get a copy of it here(offsite): IRC-Bot-0.01.tar.gz

      Keep in mind, this code is still green, have yet to finsh it up. In fact, I had plans of releasing it on perlmonks first, before uploading it to CPAN. Guess I'll just do it now.

      I even included a little script that should connect for ya, if you want to test it out.

    Me no expert, but I see plenty of things on CPAN that solve the same problem in different ways. Consider the myriad XML parsers (e.g. XML::Parser, XML::Simple, XML::Simpler, and so on). If it is good code, it will get used and become popular. I don't see there being a problem with it
