Aha! Are you saying it's possible to find the total number of ++ versus -- votes on a given node? Is is possible to add that to node reputation display? Inquiring minds want to know....

I've had quite a few nodes appear to bounce up and down in rep and I think this would be a fascinating indicator of how interesting|controversial|provocative a node is.

Yeah, for a week now I've been thinking it would be cool to show net rep (just like now) and minus votes (if any) (like "Reputation: 4 (-3)" for 7 plus and 3 minus votes), but only for nodes you own. I don't think the number of minus votes should be public, but I don't feel strongly about that point.

I agree with the comments on being able to see the ++ and -- votes on a given node. That would be an interesting little stat to have.

Another suggestion I'd like to throw out there, is I think it would be good if, after we've used all our votes for the day, we could see the reputation on any node, even if we hadn't voted on that node. One of the things people have been emphasizing is getting new monks to learn about what are good and bad posts by having the voting bonuses still apply for the lower levels. But the lower levels are only supplied with a small amount of votes, making it so we only see the reputations for just a few nodes per day.

I definitely see the wisdom of not letting people see the reputations before voting. Otherwise votes might be swayed because people are expecting nodes with high reps to be good and nodes with low reps to be not so good. Once all the votes have been used for the day, this ceases to be an issue, however.

Another option would be to have another vote type, kinda like the null vote in that it wouldn't change the nodes reputation at all, but would let the person see the nodes rep. Of course this would only let people who have votes to give see the nodes reps.
I'd rather we didn't see the reps on *everybody's* nodes -- I'm afraid that would make novices too timid about posting. I do think that all registered users should see the reps of Anonymous Monk posts. That would make Anonymous Monk a responsive way for people to float ideas, as well as providing a little motivation to use it responsibly. Shy monks could use it to get their feet wet, and it would make the voting system less mysterious to beginners.

On the other hand, people might post things anonymously just so everyone could see how cool they are... then try to take credit later via posts and chatterbox... and beginners whose anonymous posts get slammed might be frightened away.

So there are two sides to it. Isn't life tough?

Speaking of votes, I just became a novice but I don't see any ++ and -- buttons.... Is there something I need to change in my user settings?

You will get votes when they are handed out tomorrow morning

See here for info on this and in the Perl Monks Faq for all your site questions.

Fresh Monks (or Aged Monks for that matter) can get an excellent idea of what is liked and what is discouraged at the Monastery by perusing Best Nodes and Worst Nodes. As the intro says, don't just vote those nodes up or down because you see them there.

Letting someone see reps when they use their votes for a day just means that they can not vote on a node, use the votes on other nodes, and still see the rep for a node they have not voted on.
