Quoting is only unnecessary for replies to very short posts or replies to the general sentiment of a post that don't address any specific part of it. Particularly when you're replying to a long post and specifically addressing two or more different concerns of it, it is not sensibly possible to avoid quoting. Makeshifts last the longest.
