I just finished a book about the Golden Ratio and the author poses a similar question: why does math match the real world at all?
For me, geometry was my entry into programming. I enjoyed the proofs and a friend of mine who already started writing his own BASIC programs told me about the similarity.
I do think programming may have more to contribute in terms of general education than geometry, but I would not like to see programming substituted for geometry. I have tried to continue my education past schooling, and in that effort I ran across Mathematics for the Million which helped me alot to get a better grasp on math. I really liked the concrete examples the author used.
Therefore, I think geometry needs to be taught to contribute to a better understanding of math; as well it can tie to general problem solving as taught through programming.
