I prefer it this way - in more traditional languages, I've actually been bitten by the existance of this side effect (or the desire to to use it cleverly). Not having this side effect may seem more awkward, but IMHO makes the code less kludgy and hackish.
Makeshifts last the longest.

<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
