Take a look at this thread by Dominus. There are a lot of pitfalls associated with file locking. Some of the ones I have pointed out is that on a *nix system, it is possible to delete a file that has an exclusive lock. It is also possible to write to a file with an exclusive lock. The reason is that unless the process requests a lock before doing its damage, the OS will allow it to continue on its merry way. Now if you know your program is the only one that will be dealing with the semaphore file and you have coded a proper locking mechanism - then you are all set.
