I think a lot of people visit Perlmonks because it's about Perl, and not because it's a group of people more or less connected to Perl discussing stuff. If you want that, go to #perl on IRC, or the NY or London Perlmongers mailinglists.

The internet is a big place. Perlmonks is interesting because it specializes. And there aren't rules saying that if you join one club on the internet, you can't join any others.

I'd say that if you want to discuss flower arrangements, or motorcycle maintainance, you should be doing that elsewhere than Perlmonks. Not only because the majority of the people on Perlmonks won't be interested in whatever non-Perl topic that will be raised here, but also because there will be other forums with lots of people interested in whatever non-Perl topic you want to discuss. Discussing it elsewhere is a "win-win" IMO.

Title:
Use:  <p> text here (a paragraph) </p>
and:  <code> code here </code>
to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
  • Want more info? How to link or How to display code and escape characters are good places to start.
