So then your arguement is based on the presupposition that

  1. Terminal widths really matter, and 80characters is such a die hard rule everyone must unconditionally follow it.
  2. Terminal widths should include the indentation - has other implications as well, reference the analogy to code searches
  3. That it is easier to set a standard on the amount of spaces than it is a standard on the visual representation of an indent
Myself, personally, I think that you are wrong on every point. I believe only word characters should count towards your arbitrary horizontal width. And if text-editors must hold true to 80 visual characters, or 78characters of width, then these editors should be free to display a tab differently or more intelligently wrap lines. The possibilities for a display of depth are damn near infinite, and there is no reason to stringently stick to an exaggerated amount of spaces at all.

Title:
Use:  <p> text here (a paragraph) </p>
and:  <code> code here </code>
to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
