Most of the "windows" boxes that perl runs on are likely to really be "cygwin" [...]

It's a small statement made in a large discussion but it still, IMHO, bears correcting. This isn't true, and I wonder how the poster (doom) came up with such a contention.

I don't have any knowledge of a place to find statistics, but I think most Monks and others who know Perl on MS Windows for the length of time I have, will agree that the number of cygwin perl installs vs the number of ActiveState Perl installations is most likely vanishingly small. As for StrawberryPerl, it is very new as well as being a small project compared to the big-time corporate smell of ActivePerl.

Those who want to be fanbois instead of discussing facts can just >/dev/null as far as I am concerned. Facts is facts. ;-)

Title:
Use:  <p> text here (a paragraph) </p>
and:  <code> code here </code>
to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
  • Want more info? How to link or How to display code and escape characters are good places to start.
