Since my criminal conviction is well known within the Perl community (and in fact, I try to bring it up wherever I can as an example of what not to do), you add nothing to the discussion (even cowardly as you did).
However, I believe my experiences make me appropriately sensitive to the issue at hand here. My conviction resulted from a mistaken (lack of) communication about purpose and context. And here, we have an example of BUU, not completely disclosing purpose and context, and therefore being misinterpreted. Thus, this is an issue that I'm qualified on which to speak.
The lesson, both here and in my case, is be very willing (and quick) to establish the context, because presumptions can work against you.
