Or, you could use wantarray to eliminate the caveat...

#!/usr/bin/perl -w $result = fun(); print "$result\n"; ($result, $error) = fun(); print "$result, $error\n"; sub fun { return wantarray ? ("stuff","Error") : "stuff" }
