in thread Who's voting and why?

I continue to find it curious that somehow, for some people communicating digitally means throwing common courtesy out the window.

One can still be a disargreeable, old fart, curmudgeon without losing ones manners.

My approach to the 'Randy' thing is this; I have known merlyn (not in the biblical sense) through his books, articles comments etc. since 1991. Never once have I read that he goes by, accepts or embraces the name 'Randy'. So I would never think to refer him as Randy? Why? Respect. No, though I do respect him. No, It's plan old common courtesy, being polite, good manners.

Maybe someday over beers merlyn will slap me on the back and say 'Say, why don't you just call me Randy' and I'll say 'No, I think Randal suits you better.'

BTW, mitd's first name is Peter and NO ONE has ever been given permission to call mitd 'Pete'.

You just reminded me of a little acronym that my friends had a few years back.

    CFC: Common F***ing Courtesy.

So the next time you hear some enviro-weenies talking about reducing CFC, let them know you fully support the need in this world for CFC. :)

I find that the best way to let people know that adding an extraneous character onto your name, such as 'y', is to ignore them until they realize that they must not be addressing you.

It's kind of like me saying to mitd, "Say, Lois how are you doing?" He's not going to look at me or even think that I'm addressing him. So in the same vein, if I said, "Say, Pete how are you doing?", I'm not truly addressing mitd since he has never (I presume from the post) gone by the name Pete.

I don't quite understand why people feel compelled to misunderstand why other people choose their most preferred name and then continue to abuse this misunderstanding when addressing them.

[shmem]: Lady_Aleena: geany supports ctags.
[Discipulus]: a good compromise can be my ($need, $opts_ref) = @_ a scalar and an hash reference
[Discipulus]: see you monks!
[Lady_Aleena]: shmem, let me get this sub rewritten, then I will look into how to use ctags in geany. Deal? 8)
[shmem]: Discipulus: yeah, that might eventually prepare the path for OO ;-)
[Lady_Aleena]: See you, Discipulus.
[shmem]: Lady_Aleena: that's up to you. I only wanted to show you a path that might be more comforting than command line grep ;-)
[Lady_Aleena]: shmem, I don't think any of my modules could be converted to OO. They are too procedural.
