That doesn't work:

    my ($this, $that, $some, $other, $foo, $bar, $baz) = ($1 .. $+);

        map {;no strict 'refs'; $$_} 1 .. $#-;

}

this, that, some, other, foo, bar, baz

A trick I've been using for quite a long time. ($#+ instead of $#- works as well).
