Howdy! With a suitable threaded browser (trn), I have no trouble keeping up on about a dozen and a half newsgroups. I am able to pick the threads I think are interesting, and ignore the rest. A group with a couple thousand unread messages is no big deal, and a group with under a hundred unread messages is almost not worth the time to read.
